DuVernay was told to look at the trash from a home belonging to a jury member. When she was dissatisfied with journalism by the tasks she was assigned, DuVernay decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a junior publicist right after college. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotional and lifestyle networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
